What Is Fluoride and Why Does It Matter?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in water, foods, and dental products. It strengthens enamel so teeth resist decay, fights cavity-causing bacteria, and can even reverse early decay by remineralizing weak spots. Simple, safe, and effective — and especially helpful for developing teeth.

Where Kids Get Fluoride

  • Fluoridated water — many communities, including parts of Colorado Springs, add fluoride to tap water
  • Fluoride toothpaste, twice a day
  • In-office fluoride treatments at regular checkups — a concentrated dose, especially helpful for cavity-prone kids
  • Fluoride supplements — only where water isn’t fluoridated, and only under professional supervision

What to Expect from a Fluoride Treatment

Quick, easy, and completely painless — most kids don’t even notice. We apply a gel, foam, or varnish; it sets quickly and starts strengthening enamel right away; and your child can eat and drink after a short wait. Most kids benefit from a treatment every six months — more often if they’re at higher cavity risk.

Is Fluoride Safe for Children?

Absolutely — in the correct amounts. Fluoride is endorsed by both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The one thing to watch is overexposure, which can cause dental fluorosis — faint white spots that are completely harmless but preventable.

  • Under age 3: a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice
  • Ages 3–6: a pea-sized amount
  • Teach kids not to swallow toothpaste, and supervise brushing
  • Using supplements plus fluoridated water? Ask us — we’ll help you get the balance right

Fluoride Myths vs. Facts

  • “Kids don’t need fluoride” — childhood is actually when fluoride helps most
  • “Toothpaste alone is enough” — toothpaste and fluoridated water work better together
  • “Fluoride is dangerous” — in recommended amounts under a dentist’s supervision, it’s safe and effective
