What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is a carefully measured dose of medication that leaves your child relaxed, drowsy, and anxiety-free. Unlike general anesthesia, your child stays awake and responsive — just calm — and may not remember much of the procedure afterward.
Who It Helps
- Kids with dental anxiety or fear
- Children too young to sit still through longer procedures
- Kids with developmental, behavioral, or sensory challenges
- Multiple or complex treatments completed in one visit
How It Works
Before the appointment, we review your child’s medical history to rule out any health concerns, walk you through the whole process, and require a health checkup within six months of the sedation date.
On the day of the procedure, your child receives the medication as a special drink combining Meperidine (Demerol) to manage discomfort, Midazolam (Versed) to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, and Hydroxyzine for its calming, anti-nausea, and antihistamine benefits. They’ll become drowsy and relaxed but remain conscious, with our team monitoring closely the entire time.
Safety and Monitoring
Heart rate, oxygen levels, and vital signs are monitored continuously, and care is adjusted as needed. Our team is trained in pediatric sedation and emergency protocols, and fully prepared to respond to any rare but possible reactions.
Preparing — and What Comes After
- Follow the fasting instructions we provide before the appointment
- Dress your child in loose, comfortable clothing (it makes monitoring easier)
- A parent or guardian must stay with your child and drive them home
- Afterward: sleepiness and wobbliness for a few hours is normal — rest at home under adult supervision
- Soft foods and fluids once fully awake; no physical activity until the effects wear off
